SUMATERA UTARA – DETEKSIPOST.COM – The song Indonesia Raya echoed along the road as President Joko Widodo headed to Kampung Jeruk, Liang Melas Datas, Karo Regency, North Sumatra Province, on Friday, February 4, 2022. People on the left and right of the road seemed very enthusiastic to welcome the Head of State and sang the national anthem all the way from the _helipad_ to the event location.
A number of school children were also seen waving small red and white flags in their hands when President Jokowi’s entourage passed in front of them. President Jokowi came to Kampung Jeruk to directly inspect the repair of damaged road infrastructure and see the potential for citrus farming in the area.
Previously, on Monday, December 6, 2021, President Jokowi received six representatives of Liang Melas Datas residents at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. In addition to conveying their aspirations, the representatives of the residents also brought a truck containing three tons of citrus fruit as a “souvenir” for President Jokowi.
Karo Regency itself is known to be one of the centers for citrus commodity production. Apart from being marketed domestically to various cities such as Bandung, Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, and several other cities, oranges from Karo Regency have also penetrated overseas markets, namely Malaysia and Singapore.
When he saw the citrus production in Karo Regency, President Jokowi had called the Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo. The President encouraged two things, namely assistance for farmers and fertilizers.
“I came from Toba here to see the road. I saw that the production in Karo might need a little assistance to increase the quality of production, firstly. Then the second thing is that fertilizer is better if it is organic here,” said President Jokowi to the Minister of Agriculture.
The President views that the citrus farming area in Karo Regency has enormous potential. However, improvements are still needed in a number of areas, from the cost structure to the branding.
“Indeed, improvements are needed, firstly to improve the cost structure, secondly to improve quality, then thirdly for better packaging and _branding. I think if these three are done, the oranges will be very good,” he explained.
